Doug was president of the Pinehurst Rotary Club for 2006-2007.
Rotary International is the largest service organization in the world. Rotary International’s president stressed the need to help impoverished countries through international projects. During Doug’s presidency, he spearheaded several projects to raise funds for critically needed equipment for the St. Ann’s Bay Hospital in Jamaica. This included working with the local hospital in Pinehurst and selecting medical equipment vendors for the best pricing.
The first project raised funds for a High Dependency Unit (HDU), which is a step down from our Intensive Care Unit. Funds were raised by raffling all-inclusive vacations at five-star resorts in Jamaica.
The second project raised funds for the pediatric and maternity wards. The same fund-raising methods were used for this project. Doctors at the hospital emphasized that thousands of lives were saved by these projects and continue to be an important asset for the hospital.
Approximately $100,000 were raised for these projects.
